Case Study Cold Storage Saved 30% Electricity Using COOLROOF® Paint Paint

Keeping vegetables fresh in India’s hot and humid climate is no small feat. For Eastern Air Conditioning & Refrigeration, one of Kolkata’s most trusted names in cold storage design and maintenance, precision cooling is the backbone of their business. The company provides complete services for cold storage, including designing, maintaining, and providing air conditioning and refrigeration for storing vegetables and other perishable items. They also deal in walk-in cold rooms, reefer vans, truck refrigeration units, and deep freezers. Based in Kolkata, West Bengal, Eastern Air Conditioning & Refrigeration is led by Mr Sandeep Roy, who is the Director and an Authorised Sales and Service Dealer for Daikin. The company specialises in managing cold chains effectively.

All was going great until it came to maintaining the optimal temperature for a cold storage facility for vegetable storage. The company was facing a major problem of condensation, temperature fluctuations and high energy consumption. The roof of their cold storage facility often accumulates moisture due to temperature differences, which causes vegetable spoilage. Various air conditioning systems were installed in the storage facility to maintain the temperature, which caused higher electricity bills. But the main problem came from the roof, which absorbed too much heat and led to vegetable spoilage.

To overcome these challenges, Indian Insulation and Engineering Company, known for its innovative turnkey cool roof solution service in India, provided a long-lasting solution through its Cool Roof Coating Service, which is designed specifically for industrial and cold storage applications.

The Problem: When Cooling Costs Spiralled

Before the project began, the storage facility by Eastern Air Conditioning & Refrigeration was struggling with several operational inefficiencies:

  • Spoilage of vegetables because of inconsistent temperature control
  • The facility had to keep the cooling condensers at maximum capacity for 22 hours to maintain the desired temperature, which leads to high electricity bills.
  • Even after trying different types of thermal insulation methods like Polyurethane Foam (PUF) Panels, Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) Boards, Cork and Mineral Wool, and Reflective Foil Insulation, the storage facility has not been getting optimal results in maintaining the temperature.

These issues were significantly affecting the company’s efficiency, energy usage, and overall profitability.

The Solution: A Cool Roof That Works Harder and Smarter

Eastern Air Conditioning & Refrigeration contacted the Indian Insulation and Engineering company and discussed about the problem they are facing. The sales team of the Indian Insulation and Engineering had consulted a solution and immediately sent its inspection team to inspect the site.

After a detailed inspection of the facility, the Indian Insulation and Engineering team recommended applying their advanced High SRI Cool Roof Paint – Coolroof ® SRI-122, a specially formulated, reflective, and insulating coating system that reduces heat absorption and improves energy efficiency.

To ensure results, the coating of Coolroof ® SRI-122 was first 4 coatings applied to a small section of the cold storage roof in April as a trial. Within a short period of 3 months, Eastern Air Conditioning & Refrigeration noticed a significant difference in temperature control and condensation levels. After seeing excellent results, the management decided to coat the entire facility.

The process involved multiple coats of the Coolroof ® SRI-122 to achieve optimal insulation and durability. The coating not only reflected sunlight but also created a strong barrier that reduced surface temperature and prevented condensation.

The Results: Cooler Temperatures, Lower Bills

30% reduction in electricity bills – Electricity costs dropped 30%, saving the company nearly one-third of its monthly operating expenses. The improved insulation reduced the load on refrigeration systems.

Low condenser maintenance – Due to the Coolroof ® SRI-122 Paint coatings, the condenser operated at maximum capacity for only 14 hours, down from 22 hours previously, which reduces maintenance costs.

Enhanced thermal insulation – The roof coating minimised heat transfer, maintaining consistent internal temperatures.

Prevented condensation and spoilage – Vegetables stayed fresh longer, significantly reducing wastage.

Increased operational efficiency – The storage unit now runs smoothly with lower energy use.

Excellent ROI – The project achieved a payback period of just six months, offering a strong long-term return on investment.

Final Words

Through their Turnkey Cool Roof Coating Service, Indian Insulation and Engineering Company helped Eastern Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Company to overcome condensation issues, cut energy costs, and improve product preservation. This project highlights how innovative insulation solutions can transform cold storage performance, delivering both efficiency and profitability.
